AND THAT’S WHAT the ancient Incan plant medicine ayahuasca is supposed to do. It rewires your brain. It can be a short cut to faith and a direct route to God. For some people, ayahuasca is liquid, spiritual lightning.

So, as much as I was not into recreational drugs, I decided to try to find a shaman in Peru (other than Puma) to (maybe) try it; in my defense, ayahuasca’s supposed to be both medicinal and absolutely no fun.

In fact, from everything I had heard and read, it is hell.

So that was my plan. I was going to stand in an open field, grab hold of the big-ass flagpole known as ayahuasca, and hope like hell to be struck from above.

But first I have to explain why I have friends who have their own shamans, and why none of them would return my e-mails.
